Conductor Dr. Joanna Sisk-Purvis' diverse musical career has included solo and ensemble performance as a professional flutist (recent gigs include the North Carolina Theatre and Mallarmé Chamber Players), musically directing for youth and community theaters, composing a full-length documentary film score, teaching private music lessons and the Music Together early childhood music program, playing and recording with an indie rock band, and exploring the music of other cultures. She holds degrees from the University of Southern CA (DMA in flute performance with minors in conducting and ethnomusicology), Northwestern Uni- versity (MM in flute performance), and UNC-Chapel Hill (BM in flute performance).

Violist Matthew Chicurel, has performed in the U.S. and Europe as an orchestral and chamber musician in such halls as New York’s Carnegie, Merkin, Alice Tully and Lincoln Center. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, under Ulrich Eichenauer, and received Masters Degree from Mannes College of Music in New York, under Dan Panner. Mr. Chicurel is a freelance performer, violin and viola teacher, is Director of the Strings and Orchestral studies programs at the Emerson Waldorf School.

Edith Gettes majored in music at UNC and received a Masters Degree in Music Performance from Indiana University. She also studied violin at the Guild Hall School of Music and Drama in London, and with pedagogue, Shinichi Suzuki, in Matsumoto, Japan. She has performed in music festivals throughout the US. Her chamber music mentors have included members of the Beaux Arts Trio and Guarneri String Quartets. She now works as a psychiatrist, musician and educator in the Triangle and is president of Music for Children.

The Raleigh public schools introduced Jason Thomas to the cello. He graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, SUNY Stony Brook (MM) and UW Madison (DMA) after studying with cellists Richard Kapuscinski and Bernard Greenhouse. Jason taught cello and performed orchestral and chamber music throughout the eastern United States and Western Europe. After performing Carmen 178 times in a seven month tour, Jason returned to North Carolina from Germany, and attended UNC Law School.

Erich Lieth plays a range of instruments including recorders, flute, guitar and wind controller, though his specialty is key- boards. He has taught individual and group lessons for the last 30 years, and performs regularly with the Latin band Saludos Compay, his world-beat jazz band One Sun, and other local groups. He teaches privately in Chapel Hill, directs the Emerson Waldorf School Jazz Band and instructs improvisation for the Piedmont Youth Orchestra. Helping people of all ages learn to express themselves through playing music is one of the most fulfilling things he can think of.

Ms. Svoboda received her Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University. She has taught privately (trumpet and french horn) for over 30 years. Currently Ms. Svoboda performs with Mimosa Winds, Highview Brass Quintet, Chapel Hill Brass Ensemble, Chapel Hill Philharmonia and Durham Savoyards. She has previously performed with the Durham Symphony and Long Leaf Opera.

Yours,

Edith Gettes, Phil  Warren and the MFC/PYO Board

"It was wonderful to see the energy of our young audience, and to have it matched by the orchestra. It was also an absolute treat to see that there is a younger generation of musicians in our region who play so well and with so much poise. Their teachers & parents are obviously doing something special, and the young string & wind players clearly are committed to music in a serious way, despite the many demands made on them by school and other activities."

Don Oehler, Chapel HIll Philharmonia Conductor on Oct. 21, 2012 Side by Side Performance
